The Bridges bid farewell to the Battle at The Bridges July 25, 2005
as over 3,000 members and their guests, made this an event to be remembered.
With Retief Goosen making birdies on four of the last six holes, he and Phil Mickelson combined
for a 5 and 3 match play victory over John Daly and Tiger Woods. It was the biggest margin of victory
in the seven-year event, which was played at The Bridges for the third and final time.
The Battle series was conceived as a television event in 1999 by IMG, Tiger’s management firm and ABC-TV to take
advantage of Woods' vast popularity. The event was first played at Sherwood Country Club and despite seeing
the ratings slowly decline through the years, the world's No. 1 player was pleased with what he had wrought.
“We were the first to present anything like this in prime time,” Woods said. “We tried to keep it interesting and
fun for the audience. We’ve done that, and I am proud of it.”
So as we say goodbye to the magical Battle, members can only look forward to more exceptional events in store for the years to come.
